What is website maintenance, in plain English?

A website isn’t a one-off purchase, it’s something that needs looking after. WordPress itself, your theme, and every plugin you use are updated regularly, sometimes to add features, but often to patch security holes. Skip those updates for too long and you’re left exposed.

Website maintenance is the ongoing work that keeps your site secure, fast and online: applying updates safely, taking regular backups in case anything goes wrong, watching for downtime, and fixing small issues before they become big ones.

We recently wrote about exactly this after a WordPress update broke a number of sites overnight, read what happened and how to avoid it. A maintenance plan is how you make sure that’s never your website.

    Why website maintenance matters

Most business owners only think about their website when something's already gone wrong, by then it's cost you customers, not just time.

Here’s what a maintenance plan protects you from:

    Security breaches.

Out-of-date plugins and themes are the single most common way small business websites get hacked.

    Losing your Google rankings.

Downtime and a broken site actively hurt your SEO, on top of the immediate lost sales.

    Update-day surprises.

A major WordPress or plugin update can break your site without warning. We test updates safely instead of applying them straight to your live site.

    Losing your own time.

You didn't start a business to spend your evenings troubleshooting a website. We handle it so you don't have to.

Prevention is a lot cheaper than the alternative: lost sales, an emergency fix, or rebuilding a site that should never have broken in the first place.

Who our maintenance plans are for

Our maintenance plans are built for business owners who rely on their website but don’t have the time, interest or in-house resource to keep it updated and secure themselves. That includes existing Search Above clients who want their new site properly looked after, and business owners with an existing WordPress site who just want it taken off their hands.

If your website brings in enquiries, bookings or sales, it’s worth protecting properly.

Don’t have a website yet, or need a rebuild rather than repairs? See our website development service instead.

    What's included in every plan

Every maintenance plan, from Bronze upwards, includes the essentials:

    Core, theme & plugin updates

Applied safely, not just blindly clicked "update" on your live site.

    Regular backups

So there's always a safe point to restore to if something goes wrong.

    Uptime & security monitoring

So issues get caught and fixed quickly, often before you even notice.

    Clear monthly reporting

Showing exactly what's been checked, updated and fixed.

No confusing spreadsheets. No vague promises. Just a website that stays looked after.

AD A&P Designs Architectural Design & Planning Consultancy

Search Above was extremely friendly and communicative.

    M Marek Owner, Empty Tattoos

I came to Search Above with no website, no brand, no idea where to start. I was setting up Empty Tattoos from scratch and needed someone who could take my vision and turn it into something professional. The whole process was straightforward and stress-free.

TA The Apple Tree Gosfield Restaurant, Gosfield Lake

Loved the look of the website. The enquiry form and the booking form have simplified how table bookings come in. Would definitely recommend.

    Common questions

No. Every plan is billed monthly with no lock-in, cancel any time.

We monitor uptime on every plan, so we're usually already looking into it before you'd notice. We aim to have any issue fixed as quickly as possible, prioritised by your plan level.

Yes, you can move up or down a tier at any time as your needs change, just get in touch.

Small updates like swapping text, images, prices or opening hours. Larger changes or new pages are quoted separately, or covered under the Platinum plan's development hours.

Maintenance plans cover keeping your existing site secure, updated and online. New design work, new features or a full rebuild are quoted separately, though Platinum includes ongoing development time for exactly this.

No, we can take over maintenance of an existing WordPress site even if we didn't build it originally. We'll usually do a quick health check first to see what state it's in.
