Write a compelling, keyword-rich page title

Summarise the page in a way that encourages a click, including your target keyword.

Why this matters

Google decides how much of your title and description to show based on pixel width, not character count, which means two titles with the same number of letters can display very differently depending on which letters they use. Get it wrong and your title gets chopped off mid-sentence, or Google rewrites your description itself, which usually looks worse than what you wrote.

Your title and description are often the first thing a potential customer reads about your business. A clean, complete snippet looks trustworthy. A cut-off one looks careless, even if the page behind it is excellent.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste in your page title
  2. Type or paste in your meta description
  3. Check the live preview to see exactly how it’ll look on Google
  4. Adjust the wording until both fit cleanly, without any awkward cut-offs

That’s it. No sign-up, no limits on how many times you use it.

What makes a good title and description

A few rules of thumb worth following, whatever the tool tells you about length:

  • Keep your title under around 60 characters to avoid it getting cut off on most screens
  • Keep your description under around 155 characters for the same reason
  • Put your most important keyword near the start of both, since that’s what a searcher scans for first
  • Write for a person, not a search engine. A title that reads naturally will always beat one stuffed with keywords, and Google’s own systems are quick to spot the difference
  • Make every page’s title and description different. Duplicate titles across pages confuse both Google and your visitors

Want help getting your whole site optimised, not just one page?

This tool is useful for checking one page at a time, but titles and descriptions are only one small part of getting a website to actually rank. If you’d like a proper look at how your whole site is performing, our SEO services include a full audit covering everything from technical issues to content and on-page optimisation.

FAQ

Google measures by pixel width, not character count. Wider letters like “W” and “M” take up more space than narrow ones like “i” or “l”, so two titles with the same character count can display differently.

Not directly. Meta descriptions aren’t a ranking factor on their own, but a description that gets cut off awkwardly, or one Google chooses to rewrite instead, can hurt your click-through rate, which does matter.

Not always. Google sometimes pulls a different snippet from your page content if it thinks that better answers the specific search someone’s typed. Writing a clear, accurate description makes it more likely Google will use yours.
